Oral Pathology in Colorado

What is Oral Pathology?

Sometimes things go wrong, even in the healthiest people.Oral pathology deals with the identification and management of a disease or habit that causes changes in the tissues in and around the mouth. Your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to have an unusual spot in your mouth or on an x-ray evaluated. We will perform a full and head and neck examination and might make a recommendation to have the area in question biopsied. Doing a biopsy allows the pathologists that we work with to examine the tissue and tell us what, if anything, is unusual about it. We can then make appropriate recommendations on whether or not more treatment needs to be done.

Cone Beam CT Imaging

Cone Beam CT imaging, or CBCT, provides our surgeons with 3-dimensional imaging of the maxillofacial region, allowing us to identify and locate most problems that would occur in the bony and dental structures of the face. It emits much lower radiation than a medical grade CT but still provides excellent resolution and information.

Oral Pathology: What To Expect

Your oral pathology consultation will include a thorough head and neck exam, and possibly a screening cone beam CT scan, completed conveniently in our AMOS offices. If they notice anything concerning or abnormal, our surgeons may then recommend a biopsy, which can be done under IV sedation in our office for your comfort.
